ICan Care
My Journey as a UI/UX Designer for Novartis' ICan Care Mobile Application.
Setting the Stage: Challenges and Objectives
The goal was clear: to create a hybrid mobile app that would provide resources like articles, reminders, and healthcare provider listings, while also gathering user feedback for analytics and clinical research.
The first hurdle was translating high-level requirements into detailed, actionable specifications. I ensured every design decision supported both usability and security while balancing a robust feature set with a seamless experience for sensitive medical workflows.
Objectives
- Empower users to manage appointments and medications effortlessly.
- Provide curated, accessible articles to enhance awareness and lifestyle.
- Enable efficient data collection for clinical studies and analytics.
- Ensure scalability and security for thousands of simultaneous users.
Understanding the Users: Discovery and Research
Through stakeholder interviews, surveys, and contextual inquiries, I identified two primary groups: cancer patients and caregivers, and healthcare professionals and researchers.
Personas
- Hannah, Cancer Survivor: needed trustworthy information and support for medication timing and appointment management.
- Dr. Ravi, Researcher: needed anonymized data with strict compliance to privacy and security requirements.
Actionable Themes
- Personalization, transparency, security, and usability.
- Simplified navigation and clear reminder setup workflows.
- Secure handling of medical data with robust encryption.
Mapping User Flows, Prototyping, and Testing
I defined critical workflows for sign-up, reminders, and content access by therapeutic area.
I moved from mid-fidelity sketches to high-fidelity interactive prototypes and tested across Android and iOS. Across three usability rounds, I refined hierarchy, mobile responsiveness, and reminder setup.
- Final usability testing achieved a 92% task success rate.
- Heuristic evaluation improved error prevention, efficiency, and visual clarity.
Delivering Impact
- User engagement increased by 40%.
- 85% of users successfully managed schedules in-app.
- Researchers reported a 25% rise in usable data.
- Zero reported data breaches after launch.
One user shared: "The app makes it so easy to track my appointments and medications. The articles are also very informative and accessible."
